What Is Laser Gum Reshaping or Smile Design?
Simply put, laser gum reshaping is a cosmetic treatment that we perform to remove excess gum tissue and/or correct the gum line. It can also be used as a part of periodontal procedures to address gum disease.
How does it work?
We get a lot of questions about this Laser Gum Reshaping procedure. Here's the basic information.
Gingival tissue can swell up during the braces process. This is caused by poor hygiene and allergies to nickel, which is in trace amounts in the brackets and wires. Sometimes there is uneven gum lines and sometimes a blemish or bump. At times the gums are painful to brush. Smile Design is a term we use to describe the process of creating the most beautiful pleasing smile. Smile Design requires symmetry, and the shape of the teeth in the smile is critical. Small looking teeth take away from the beauty of your smile.
All of these problems can be fixed with a simple procedure that is called Smile Design (laser gingivectomy).

The Process
The procedure uses a diode laser to cut through the tissue. The laser cauterizes the tissue during the process and reduces bleeding and pain after the surgery.
The ideal time to do the procedure is 2-3 months before the braces are removed. We can do it anytime, but the gums may regrow slightly and the procedure may need to be done again if it is early in treatment.
The procedure only takes 10-15 minutes to do, and healing process is 10-14 days. No pain medication is required after the procedure.
Usually the upper gums are the only ones showing, so they are frequently done. The lower gums may also be done.
What Does It Cost?
The cost of the procedure is $200. If there are any concerns after the surgery, the procedure can be done again. Dr Morris will correct any discrepancies at no cost if necessary.
Other Procedures
Local anethesia (small little shots of lidocaine) numb the tissue and are necessary for the procedure.
Frenectomies (removing small skin connections between the lips and gums) can also be done with the laser,
